The ELA technology standards are in place to help students learn how to implement technology into their educational/professional work. LAFS.7.SL.2.5 (7th grade) requires educators to implement multimedia/visual components into their presentations/lessons. During past school assignments I have loved using graphics, slideshows, posters, etc. to make presentations and lessons more exciting; we also practiced using graphics and posters in our newsletter assignment, which I had very little to no trouble with! As a student who has dealt with these components on multiple occasions, I can see how important this standard is when creating an effective and comfortable learning environment. Based on my current skills and the observation above I think I am very prepared to implement this standard and am excited to expand my knowledge on how to do more within it!
One resource available in the CPALMS (7th grade, English) that stood out to me was an interactive slideshow lesson on understanding how events influence individuals and ideas. The slideshow begins with the lesson objectives, dives into the information, and has intermittent practice to ensure the student is following along and retaining the main points. Because this is such a broad topic with a lot of different factors, this activity would be a good review for the students to make sure they have gone over and retained everything covered. This activity also implements real-life examples that will aid students in understanding it from a personal view, which usually results in a better understanding of the material.
Technology is all around us and will only continue to be more prominent as time goes on, so I think it’s very important that we implement it into education. In order to teach technology, it’s important that the teacher is a proficient user of the internet! One new skill I learned this week was how to use placeholders when searching the web. I have often found myself searching for titles/phrases that I couldn’t fully remember and never knew there was a way to troubleshoot it! Using an asterisk in place of the missing/forgotten word(s) (such as Little * on the Prairie) will prompt an easier and more accurate search. This will also help to take down time spent researching!
Hi Mary! I picked the same ELA standard except it was for 8th grade. It looks like students are supposed to build a repertoire of multimedia tools over the course of their education, which is an experience I think we both share. The use of asterisks when Google searching was also new to me, and now I’m wondering about all the times that would have made a search so much faster in the past. I agree that building proficiency in technological skills is vital to incorporating technology in the classroom, especially as digital involvement will only increase over time!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about using asterisks as placeholders! That is definitely a skill I will be utilizing in the future. When I was analyzing the different standards for Kindergarten, I felt prepared enough to teach students what they needed to know, also.
ReplyDeleteI also love making posters and other graphic designs on my presentations! It's so much fun, I oftentimes get distracted by focusing too much on it. I talked about the same thing for the CPALMS, I loved the interface and how it broke down different books, it was really cool! And I'm also super glad that we watched that Googling video, my research for my papers will be so much quicker now!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! I loved how you emphasized that technology is all around us in the 21st century and needs to be a part of our education as well. I was also very excited to learn about the placeholder technique in researching. I think it will save me a lot of time in my classwork and just on a daily basis!
ReplyDeleteHey Mary! I completely agree that as teachers it's super important to be efficient in searching. I forgot about the asterisk but its definitely helpful.
